Education

Kevin is a PhD candidate at Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul, pursuing a degree in Political Science and Diplomacy. His research, set for completion in December 2024, explores the evolving nature of Australia’s national identity, particularly through the lens of media discourse and its depiction of China as a ‘significant other.’ He holds a Master of Professional Studies in International Relations and Human Rights from the University of Auckland, where he earned Second Class Honours. Additionally, he completed a Postgraduate Diploma of Arts in Political Science from the University of Auckland and a Graduate Diploma in Teaching from the University of Waikato, specializing in secondary education in social science and history. Kevin also studied at Yonsei University in Seoul as part of an exchange program supported by the Prime Minister’s Scholarship for Asia. His educational journey is marked by a focus on international relations, political economy, and East Asian studies, alongside hands-on teaching training that equips him for diverse academic and professional challenges.

Professional Experience

Kevin has amassed substantial experience in both academic research and teaching. As a high school teacher through the ASTTP, he currently teaches social science and history at Rangitoto College, New Zealand’s largest high school, where he also supports Korean language learning and cultural activities. Prior to this, Kevin gained teaching experience at Auckland Grammar High School and has served as an English instructor at various academies, including Tomato Academy, JLee Preparatory, M-Poly Academy, and Hackers Education Group. He has also been a PhD researcher at the Sungkyun Institute for Global Strategy, Sungkyunkwan University, where he designed and conducted research on Australia-China relations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kevin’s earlier roles include working as a journalist for the African Development Bank in Busan and serving as a Teaching Assistant for a Diplomacy Training class at Sungkyunkwan University, where he helped mentor students aspiring to become diplomats. Kevin’s primary research interest lies in the dynamics of national identity formation, international relations, and media discourse, with a specific focus on Australia and East Asia. His PhD research investigates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the relationship between Australia and China, exploring how media narratives contribute to the process of ‘othering’ and shape national identity. He is particularly interested in how Australia positions China as a ‘significant other’ within its national discourse, using this dynamic to understand broader geopolitical relationships in the Asia-Pacific region. Kevin’s research also extends to themes of human rights and international diplomacy, as evidenced by his earlier work on North Korean defector NGOs during his master’s studies. His interdisciplinary approach combines qualitative and quantitative methods, aiming to provide insights into the evolving nature of geopolitical identities. Through his academic presentations in international forums, Kevin contributes to discussions on political and cultural identities, emphasizing the role of media and public discourse in shaping international relations.
