Liang Cheng earned his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, China, from 2004 to 2009. Prior to that, he completed his B.Sc. in Chemistry at Beijing Normal University, also in Beijing, from 2000 to 2004.

Experience:

Liang Cheng is currently a Professor at the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, China, a position he has held since 2021. Prior to this, he served as an Associate Professor at the same institute from 2015 to 2021. He gained valuable international experience as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at Columbia University in New York, NY, USA, working with Prof. Ronald Breslow from 2011 to 2014. Before his postdoctoral stint, Liang was a Group Leader & Research Scientist at Chemizon Inc. & Centaurus Biopharma Co., Ltd. in Beijing, China, from 2009 to 2011.

Research:

Liang Cheng’s research interests include the recognition and functionalization of RNA by small organic molecules, as well as the selective synthesis of biologically active molecules.

Awards:

Liang Cheng has received several prestigious awards and recognitions for his contributions to the field of chemistry. In 2020, he was awarded the Outstanding Youth Science Foundation by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, as well as the Thieme Chemistry Journals Award. In 2016, he was selected as a finalist for the CIFAR (Canadian Institute for Advanced Research) Azrieli Global Scholars Program. In 2015, he was honored with the Young Elite Scientist Sponsorship Program by the China Association for Science and Technology. Earlier in his career, Liang received Centaurus BioPharma’s Annual Outstanding Staff Award in 2011 and the Best Report Award in the 2nd “CCME-IOC & ICCAS-LMRF” Alfa Aesar® Symposium in 2009. He was also recognized with the Outstanding Young Scientist Award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences for the period 2007-2008.

Mr. Bewket Sisay Melaku has extensive professional experience in the field of journalism and media. Since 20/10/2018, he has been employed as a Journalism and Media Lecturer at Debre Markos University in Debre Markos, Ethiopia. In this role, he teaches various journalism and media courses, conducts research in media and journalism communications, teaches audio and video editing with different software, instructs digital media, online journalism, and social media courses, and leads media productions in a multimedia lab. From 01/10/2022 to 30/11/2022, he served as a Project Associate at Mersa Media Institute in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In this position, he maintained and monitored project plans and schedules, organized and participated in stakeholder meetings, documented important actions and decisions from meetings, provided administrative support as needed, and developed project strategies.
