Education

Dr. Pandurangan Arumugam earned his doctoral degree in Physical-Organic Chemistry from Anna University, Chennai, in 1995. His Ph.D. research focused on the synthesis of novel Chromium (VI) based heterocyclic halochromates and the study of the kinetics and mechanisms of the oxidation of organic substrates. His work on organo-metallic oxidants, particularly Quinolinium Fluorochromates (QFC) and Quinolinium Bromochromate (QBC), received widespread recognition and applications. Dr. Arumugam further enhanced his expertise during his postdoctoral research in Nanobiotechnology at the Max-Planck-Institute for Biochemistry, Munich, Germany, under the guidance of Nobel Laureate Professor Dr. Robert Huber.

Professional Experience

Dr. Arumugam has guided 39 Ph.D. scholars, 16 M. Tech, 8 M. Phil, and 28 postgraduate students, demonstrating his dedication to mentoring the next generation of scientists. His research has been supported by various prestigious funding agencies, leading to over 185 publications in internationally reputed journals. He is also an active member of several scientific societies, including the Catalysis Society of India, the Indian Society for Technical Education, and the Indian Science Congress Association.

Research Interests

Since 1997, Dr. Arumugam has concentrated his research on Industrial Catalysis, Environmental Sciences, Bio-fuels, DSSC (Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells), and Nanotechnology. His research group has been instrumental in developing a variety of advanced materials, including zeolites, carbon nanotubes, and mesoporous molecular sieves like MCM-41 and SBA-15. These materials have been applied in energy storage, memory devices, biological applications, and environmental remediation. His work on eco-friendly catalysts for the synthesis of polyamide precursors and the removal of organic contaminants from nuclear power plant waste has been particularly impactful.

Dr. Arumugam’s contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Max-Planck-Society Scholarship, Hindustan Platinum Award, Sistla-Kameswari Young Scientist Gold Medal Award, and the Tamilnadu Scientist Award (TANSA) in Chemical Sciences.
