Prof. Dr. Hoda A. Ahmed has a distinguished academic background in Chemistry, with a B.Sc. in Chemistry (Very good with honors) from Cairo University – Faculty of Science – Chemistry Department, obtained in 2006. She began her career as an Instructor at Cairo University – Faculty of Science in May 2007 and completed pre-master courses in 2007-2008. Dr. Ahmed went on to earn her M.Sc. in Physical Chemistry from Cairo University – Faculty of Science – Chemistry Department in 2009, with a thesis titled “Steric Interaction and Phase Behavior of Some Laterally Substituted Liquid Crystalline Compounds.” Continuing her academic journey, she became an Assistant Lecturer at Cairo University – Faculty of Science (Physical Chemistry) in December 2009. Dr. Ahmed further pursued her studies and obtained a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Cairo University – Faculty of Science – Chemistry Department in 2012. Her doctoral thesis was on the “Effect of Polarity, Position, and number of Lateral Substituents on the Mesophase Behavior of Some Model Compounds in Pure and Mixed States.” Dr. Ahmed’s dedication and expertise in Physical Chemistry led to her appointment as a Lecturer at Cairo University – Faculty of Science (Physical Chemistry) in July 2012. She continued to advance in her academic career, becoming an Associate Professor at Cairo University – Faculty of Science (Physical Chemistry) in July 2017. In August 2018, Dr. Ahmed joined Taibah University – Faculty of Science (Physical Chemistry) as an Associate Professor. Demonstrating her excellence in the field, Dr. Ahmed was promoted to Full Professor at Cairo University – Faculty of Science (Physical Chemistry) in September 2022. She further expanded her academic reach by becoming a Full Professor at Taibah University – Faculty of Science (Physical Chemistry) in September 2023. Dr. Hoda A. Ahmed’s research interests and areas of expertise encompass a wide range of topics in Chemistry. She is particularly focused on the synthesis and characterization of novel liquid crystalline materials. Her work involves the investigation of liquid crystals using various techniques such as DSC, POM, XRD, and electro-optic techniques. Dr. Ahmed is also interested in the applications of liquid crystalline materials, optical materials, and polymers. Ahmed has acquired extensive instrumental training in various analytical techniques, including Polarized Optical Microscopy (POM), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), UV-Spectrophotometry, FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, and electro-optic investigation of liquid crystals and polymers. Her proficiency in these techniques has been honed through practical experience and academic training, enabling her to conduct advanced research in her field. Furthermore, Dr. Ahmed has received certificates from the Faculty of Science at Cairo University through the Graduate Research Challenge Program in 2010 (GRCF). Dr. Hoda A. Ahmed has been actively engaged in teaching and tutoring at Cairo University, specifically in the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, since 2007. Dr. PeiJian Shi pursued a Ph.D. in Ferrous Metallurgy at Shanghai University, Shanghai, China, from September 2016 to June 2021, under the supervision of Prof. Yunbo Zhong. Prior to his doctoral studies, he completed a Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering at Jinan University, Jinan, China, from September 2012 to June 2016. Dr. Shi also served as a Post-doctoral co-supervisor at City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China, from October 2016 under the guidance of Prof. C.T. Liu and Prof. Yuntian Zhu.

Research Experience:

Dr. PeiJian Shi specializes in the development of prototype materials for critical applications, with a focus on high-entropy alloys, Al and Cu alloys, and cryogenic steels. His work involves microstructure design through thermomechanical processing, directional solidification, and bioinspired hierarchical structures. He conducts mechanical characterizations using various tests such as tensile, compressive, impact, nano-indentation, three-point bending, and LUR tests. Dr. Shi’s research also delves into deformation and failure mechanisms, studying edge/screw dislocations, forest/GND dislocations, mechanical twins, and martensitic transitions. He employs multi-scale research methods including high-energy in-situ synchrotron diffraction, microscopy techniques like SEM, EBSD, TEM, STEM, and HAADF/LAADF-STEM to study materials at different length scales.

Dr. PeiJian Shi has presented his research on materials science and technology at various international conferences. In 2023, he participated in the FEMS EUROMAT conference in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, where he delivered a Highlight Lecture titled “Hierarchical crack buffering triples ductility in eutectic herringbone high-entropy alloys,” showcasing his work on innovative material designs. In 2019, he was a speaker at the Gordon Research Conference on Heterogeneous Materials in Hong Kong, China, where he gave an Invited Presentation on “Enhanced strength–ductility in hetero-structured high-entropy alloys,” highlighting his contributions to the field.
