Research Achievements:

In a bid to safeguard marine ecosystems from the threats posed by biological organisms transported via ballast water, the International Maritime Organization established the International Convention on the Control and Management of Ballast Water and Ship Sediments in 2004. This convention has spurred significant research and development efforts, with UV radiation emerging as a promising method due to its effectiveness and alignment with convention requirements. However, the large capacity of UV reactors in ballast water treatment systems often necessitates multiple high-power UV lamps, leading to substantial energy consumption and costs. To address these challenges, this study focuses on the development of a controller for UV reactors in ship-based ballast water treatment systems. The aim is to optimize UV radiation control, thereby extending the lifespan of UV lamps, reducing energy consumption, and ensuring effective disinfection. Experimental findings from ship-based trials demonstrate the efficacy of the developed UV controller, highlighting its potential to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of ballast water treatment systems. 🚢🔬
