Ms. Dorothy Murugu has a wealth of experience in nutrition and international development, with a focus on improving food and nutrition security in Africa. She served as a Senior Nutrition Consultant for the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA)ā€™s Initiative for Food and Nutrition Security in Africa (IFNA), where she played a key role in supporting nutrition-sensitive agriculture programming in Kitui County, Kenya. Ms. Murugu also worked as an International Consultant for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in Rome, Italy, and as a Nutrition and Social Inclusion Specialist, supporting missions to the Aquaculture Business Development Programme (ABDP). She further contributed her expertise as a Project Management Consultant for the Evidence and Action Toward Safe, Nutritious Food (EATSAFE) Project, a USAID-funded initiative, and as a Senior Consultant for Nutrition, providing technical advisory to multiple projects in the African region for IFAD. Ms. Murugu’s dedication to improving nutrition outcomes and promoting sustainable food systems underscores her commitment to advancing global health and development goals.

Ms. Dorothy Murugu holds a PhD in Food Science and Nutrition from Jomo Kenyatta University of Science & Technology in Kenya, which she completed from 2016 to 2024. Prior to her doctoral studies, she obtained a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the same university, graduating in 2011. Ms. Murugu’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Food Science & Technology from Egerton University in Kenya, where she graduated in 2002. Her educational background has equipped her with a strong foundation in food science, nutrition, and public health, which she applies in her professional work to address food and nutrition security challenges.

Education:

Since entering University, She have always been involved in research. she have always worked on projects serving diabetic, dyslipidemic and hypertensive patients. These projects consisted of providing individualized nutritional care for these patients. In addition, she was a pedagogical supervisor, who guides nutrition students to propose nutritional guidelines and develop eating plans to meet the nutritional needs of these patients. she have developed research projects and guided students in the development of scientific projects. Furthermore, she was always invited to teach classes and participate in course completion work panels. It’s something I enjoy doing and she feel fulfilled. she have a master’s degree and a postgraduate degree in Clinical Nutrition. she have articles and book chapters that have been published.

Experience and Achivements:

Recently, she published a very interesting work on the effect of a garlic supplement on blood pressure in hypertensive patients, it is a clinical trial study developed in master’s degree. This study is very important, as it is a botanical alternative that can contribute to controlling blood pressure in hypertensive patients. Furthermore, the clinical relevance is comparable to traditional first-line medications (hydrochlorothiazide or valsartan). she was very pleased with this publication, a very great record in academic career.

Research:

The user has completed three research projects and is currently involved in none. Their citation index in Scopus/Web of Science/PubMed/Indian Citation Index is 2. They have been involved in one consultancy and industry-sponsored project. The user has published one book with an ISBN, covering text, reference, chapters, and conference proceedings. From the interpretation of the results, the textual production for the preparation of the scientific article was also responsibility. she have publications derived from undergraduate, master’s and contributions she made to course completion work. Twice, she had the experience of working on creating content for companies that work with distance education. she led research groups to discuss scientific articles, guidance on research instruments (adipometers, stethoscope and sphingmomanometer, measuring tape). she have already been involved in extension work, which involved the participation of students, who were guided to develop nutritional procedures to meet the nutritional needs of hypertensive, renal, diabetic and dyslipidemic patients.
