Professional Profiles:

Education:

Prof. Ashish Kumar Tewari holds a Ph.D. in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from Lucknow University, Lucknow, India, awarded in 2000. He completed his M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry from Kanpur University, with studies at F. G. College Raebareli, in 1993. His undergraduate degree, a B.Sc. in Chemistry and Physics, was obtained from Lucknow University (BSNV Degree College) in 1991.

Research Work:

Prof. Ashish Kumar Tewari is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. His research focuses on Molecular Recognition and Medicinal Chemistry. His work involves synthesizing bioactive molecules, flexible molecules with aromatic backbones, and foldamers to study aromatic interactions. Since approximately 20% of amino acids are aromatic, understanding aromatic interactions is crucial in drug-receptor interactions. His research group is actively involved in synthesizing pyrazole, imidazole, pyridine, and pyridazine systems, yielding interesting results such as solid-state eclipsed and staggered stacked conformations. Their work is reflected in their publications, with ongoing research yet to be published.

Post Doctoral Research Work:

During his postdoctoral research, Prof. Ashish Kumar Tewari worked at the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI) in Lucknow, UP, India, as a CSIR Research Associate. His project focused on “Stereochemical control in aliphatic compounds by aromatic residues,” involving the synthesis of Pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine. This compound is isomeric to purine found in biological systems and serves as a model to study intra- and inter-molecular interactions important in drug-receptor interactions. He also worked as a Research Associate at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai, India, in the Department of Chemistry. His research there involved synthesizing monomers like triacytelene to prepare polydiacytelenes with aromatic backbones such as quinoline. This process included Suzuki coupling reaction followed by hydrolysis, leading to solid-state polymerization initiated thermally, photochemically, or by γ-irradiation. Recent interest in polydiacytelenes (PDAs) lies in their large and fast non-linear optical response, making them promising for applications in ultrafast optical signal processing.

Teaching Professional Work:

Prof. Ashish Kumar Tewari has held various positions in academia and the pharmaceutical industry. Since June 14, 2019, he has been serving as a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi, a Central University in India.
